Prof. Mohammad Arif Khan currently serves as Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery at Khyber Girls Medical College in Peshawar, Pakistan and is the incharge of Orthopaedic and Spine Unit A. His impressive career spans several decades and includes significant contributions to the field of orthopedics, Spine surgery and Arthroplasty surgery.
- Education and Fellowships:
- Prof. Khan earned his M.B.B.S. degree from Khyber Medical College, Peshawar, in 1988.
- He became a Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan, specializing in Orthopaedic surgery in 1995.
- Prof. Khan pursued fellowships in Arthroplasty surgery (2002) and Spine surgery (2003) at the University of Malaya, Malaysia.
- In 2008, he completed a Spine fellowship for overseas doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Ohio, USA.
- He also holds a “Certificate in Health Profession Education” (CHPE) from Khyber Medical University.
- He also got his training from Germany in “ Uniportal Full Endoscopic Spine Surgery” in 2018.
- Career Highlights:
- Prof. Khan began his career as an Assistant Professor at the Post Graduate Medical Institute in Peshawar (2004).
- He later joined Khyber Girls Medical College as a Professor in Orthopaedic surgery (2012).
- He is one of the pioneers of modern spine surgery in Pakistan and developed the first “Spine Unit” in KPK.
- Notably, he served as the Vice Principal (Clinical) of Khyber Girls Medical College (2014-2016) and as the Chair of the selection and promotion committee (2017-2019).
- He also held the position of Dean at the Post Graduate Medical Institute (2020-2022).
- Clinical Expertise:
- Apart from General Orthopaedic surgery, Prof. Arif Khan is a skilled Spine surgeon and deals with all kinds of spine pathologies including deformities like Scoliosis and Kyphosis,
- He is also an Endoscopic Spine Surgeon and is very skilled in procedures like Endoscopic Discectomy and Endoscopic Spinal Decompression.
- Apart from Spine surgery, Prof. Khan is also a skilled Arthroplasty surgeon, having completed a one-year fellowship in Joint Replacement Surgery at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. His primary interests lie in Primary Total Knee and Total Hip Arthroplasty, as well as revision arthroplasty surgeries.
- International Leadership:
- Prof. Khan’s reputation extends globally. He currently serves as the Secretary General of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA) for a second consecutive term.
- Remarkably, he is the first and only Pakistani to hold a leadership role in the APOA, which represents 23 countries across Asia and Australia.
- Additionally, Prof. Khan is the President Elect of the Society of Spine Surgeons of Pakistan and the Secretary General of the Pakistan Arthroplasty Society.
- He also represents Pakistan as the Chief delegate to the Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS).
- Past Roles:
- Prof. Khan previously served as the Vice President of the Pakistan Orthopaedic Association (2010-2011) and as the Secretary General of the Society of Spine Surgeons, Pakistan (2016-2018).
- He played a key role in organizing the annual congress of the Pakistan Orthopaedic Association as the General Secretary in 2012.
- Currently, he has been selected as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee for Orthocon 2024
